Spring Cleaning Tips: Expert Advice for a Fresh Home

When it comes to spring cleaning, having a solid plan and the right supplies can make all the difference. Here are some useful tips for shopping and effective cleaning strategies from experts.

Shopping Tips for Spring Cleaning

  1. Make a List: Before heading out, create a checklist of cleaning supplies you need. This might include all-purpose cleaners, microfiber cloths, sponges, and trash bags. Having a list helps you avoid impulse buys and ensures you get everything necessary.

  2. Choose Eco-Friendly Products: Look for natural cleaning solutions that are safe for your family and pets. For instance, a simple all-purpose cleaner can be made by mixing equal parts of white vinegar and water, which is effective for various surfaces [2].

  3. Invest in Quality Tools: While it might be tempting to go for the cheapest options, investing in high-quality cleaning tools like a good vacuum or mop can save you time and effort in the long run. Experts recommend having a vacuum with a soft dusting brush for cleaning blinds and other delicate surfaces [2].

  4. Stock Up on Essentials: Don’t forget to buy items that can be used for a variety of cleaning tasks, from deodorizing carpets to tackling soap scum in the bathroom [2].

Effective Spring Cleaning Strategies

  1. Declutter First: Start by decluttering each room. This makes the cleaning process easier and more effective. Use boxes to sort items into categories: keep, donate, and discard. Dana K. White suggests focusing on visible areas first, like the entryway, to see immediate results [3].

  2. Room-by-Room Approach: Tackle one room at a time. This prevents feeling overwhelmed and allows you to focus on deep cleaning each space. For example, in the kitchen, declutter cabinets and clean out the fridge, while in the bathroom, check for expired products and clean surfaces thoroughly [1].

  3. Don’t Forget the Overlooked Areas: Cleaning experts highlight often-missed spots like air conditioner filters, fridge coils, and range hood filters. Regularly cleaning these can improve air quality and appliance efficiency [3].

  4. Use the Right Techniques: For windows, clean on a cloudy day to avoid streaks. A mixture of vinegar and water works well for glass surfaces. When cleaning carpets, sprinkle baking soda to absorb odors before vacuuming [1][2].

  5. Involve the Family: Make spring cleaning a family affair. Assign tasks to each member, which can make the process quicker and more enjoyable. Kids can help with sorting toys or dusting surfaces [1].

  6. Finish with a Fresh Scent: After cleaning, consider using essential oils or natural air fresheners to leave your home smelling fresh. A few drops of essential oil in a diffuser can create a pleasant atmosphere [2].

By following these tips and strategies, you can make your spring cleaning more efficient and effective, leaving your home sparkling and ready for the warmer months.

Here's a recap of the things you may want to purchase:

  • Microfiber Cloths: These are great for dusting and cleaning surfaces without scratching them. They trap dust and allergens effectively.

  • All-Purpose Cleaner: Look for eco-friendly options that can clean various surfaces, from countertops to appliances. Brands like Method and Seventh Generation are popular choices.

  • Glass Cleaner: A streak-free glass cleaner will help you achieve crystal-clear windows and mirrors. You can also make a DIY version using equal parts water and vinegar.

  • Disinfectant Wipes: These are handy for quick cleanups and disinfecting surfaces, especially in high-touch areas like doorknobs and light switches.

  • Floor Cleaners: Depending on your flooring type, choose a cleaner specifically formulated for hardwood, tile, or laminate floors. Brands like Bona offer good options for hardwood floors.

  • Oven Cleaner: A specialized oven cleaner can tackle tough grease and burnt-on food. Look for non-toxic formulas if you're concerned about chemicals.

  • Laundry Detergent: A powerful detergent is essential for freshening up linens and clothing. Consider options with natural ingredients for a gentler touch.

  • Furniture Polish: A good furniture polish can help protect and shine wood surfaces. Look for natural or plant-based products to avoid harsh chemicals.

  • Carpet Cleaner: If you have carpets, a dedicated carpet cleaner or a stain remover can help remove spills and odors effectively.

  • Essential Oils: These can be added to your cleaning solutions for a pleasant scent and additional antibacterial properties. Popular options include tea tree oil and lavender oil.

    Spring Cleaning Checklist

Checking in with my fellow organizers.  Have you started your spring cleaning yet?  Well if not, here is a list to help you get started.

    1.  Computer document, music, pictures, cookie, temp, and other stuff taking up hard drive space.
    2.  Phone storage --dumping useless stuff including apps you don't use.
    3.  Digital camera (for the old school) when do you plan on transferring or printing out photos from like 2010?
    4.  Vacuuming (and shampooing) all rooms (including vents, baseboards, ceilings, and light fixtures, behind and under furniture).
    5.  Wiping walls, doors, knobs and light switches.
    6.  Dusting all those dust collectors including shelf units.
    7.  Closets (removal of old clothes, useless shoes, etc.)
    8.  Cabinets (how many containers, cups, pots, etc. do you really need?)
    9.  Drawers (so that's where your stuff has been hiding?)
    10.  Paper files (wouldn't it be best just to scan them and then pitch?)
    11.  Tools (are you really using all that stuff?)
    12.  Books (someone can read those).

Thing of some more stuff you have yet to do...happy spring cleaning!

A Checklist of What You Might Want to Do Before Spring

The weather will get better one day soon and you will want to get out more during that time.  This is why it is always best to get indoor chores done before you get outdoors more frequently.  So here is a To-Do list that will help some of you who have yet to get started.

    1.  Take a walk through your home and note messy areas, unorganized areas, and other places that haven't been touched in a long time.

    2.  List what needs to go, then set up an appointment with the local thrift store to come and take away those bagged and boxed items.  You will need to share the list with the store, so they know what they are coming to get.  Be sure you get a receipt for your donations because these will come in handy when you start itemizing your taxes (under charitable donations) for next year.

    3. Look for ways to organize things better.  If you have many little things, get necessary items to organize them.  Search "how to organize..." include what you need to organize.

    4.  Enlist help only if you know the individuals will not try to get you to keep stuff.

    5.  Visit Ebay, the local pawn shop, a children's boutique, bookstores, take out an ad, and sell some of the things you don't use.

    6.  Remove large furniture away from walls, move boxes and shelves and examine your walls, baseboards and flooring.  Those of you who receive much snow and rain might have a problem festering that you don't know about.

    7.  Check under cabinets?  Is it well organized or could items be better managed.  Also, check for signs of mold.

    8.  Clean rugs, wipe walls, inside of windows, and remove any trace of molds using bleach.

    9.  Dust off items especially things that hang from walls, vents, and items that sit low.

    10.  Remove any food products and medicines that are expired.

Taking the time to get your household organized while making some money and helping others will make you feel good.  You will be so glad to have fun outdoors without the worry of how your residence might look or smell.  Be sure to check appliances like water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners, refrigerators and more. You can search the Internet on troubleshooting these items and how what sounds mean trouble for your home.  One other thing, be sure to get those indoor odors under control too--check for things online that might help.  Periodically, open windows and shut off heat.

    Spring Cleaning?

Every year those of us who are very particular about our environments, will look around and say, "Time to start doing some spring cleaning!"  This may consist of sorting old clothing, appliances, shoes, book, videos, and more.  Items are bagged and ready for a local donation center.  Others will clean house from top to bottom.  Some will just do a little light housekeeping and hope one day that the other stuff will just work itself out!

If you are interested in spring cleaning, there are many blog entries on this site that will help you organize one room at a time.  The key to a successful spring cleaning is to work one room at a time.  Don't try to do everything all on one day.  That kind of cleaning is overwhelming!  It makes you and those living with you resent spring cleaning; rather than embrace it!  If you want others to help you, consider giving them something in exchange for their service.  Don't expect people to just want to do something just because.  People living with you may not consider cleaning the house from top to bottom all that important.  Besides, if you maintain your cleaning all year round, you won't feel pressed to complete the majority of your tasks exclusively during the spring.

Now for those who are new to all this organizing and cleaning, this is the time of year that those 30 plus moms and dads just might be putting many things out for yard sales, online auctions, and flea markets.  The best thing about spring cleaning are those treasures you might find that people simply don't need or want.  The holiday season wasn't that long ago and chances are many households inherited things that they really didn't need or want.  So make plans to bargain shop!

When you are ready to clean and organize your home, do remember to list all of the supplies you will need to get your tasks done ie.) cleaning supplies, bucket, organizer, boxes, garbage bags, etc.  Save some money so that you aren't going into funds at the last minute reserved for something else like bills.  It can be frustrating to start cleaning a room only to realize you don't have anything to effectively completely your tasks.

Spring cleaning is a great time of year, but what is better is when you know that your house is clean and organized enough that this time of year can come and go and you wouldn't miss it!
